The 2013 Willamette Sailing Club Vancouver Lake Youth Regatta is coming up June 29 – 30 on Vancouver Lake in Washington, and South Portland’s Willamette Sailing Club (WSC) is looking for volunteers.  The Willamette Sailing Club has been sailing in Portland since 1961, and it is located five minutes south of downtown Portland on the banks of the Willamette River.  The club hosts a busy year-round schedule of racing, cruising, and learn-to-sail programs, as well as a number of river-related social and educational events, all of which are open to the public.  Each summer, WSC’s certified instructors teach more than 600 kids and adults sailing, water safety, and river adventuring skills.

The Racing Rules of Sailing (RRS) and the US Sailing Prescriptions will be governing the Regatta, unless modified by the Sailing Instructions or by class rules that do not conflict with the RRS, Prescriptions or Sailing Instructions.  The classes offered will include Laser Full Rig, Laser Radial, Vanguard 15, Optimist Pram (Red, Blue, White, and Green Fleets), and O’pen Bic dinghy.  According to the Notice of Race, they will also be holding the US Sailing Sears triple-handed Area L qualifier in loaned Thistles, with a minimum of three boats required.  There will be a Thistle clinic on Saturday and racing on Sunday.

If you are interested in participating, you must be 18 years of age or under, unless you are an Opti competitor, in which case you can be no older than 15.  They will be dividing Optis into three groups based on age.  Red will include Optis ages 13 – 15, Blue will include those ages 11 – 12, and White will be for those 10 and under.  The Optimist Green Fleet (Novice) will receive a separate start.  The Notice of Race notes that older entrants may compete but will not be eligible for prizes.

Ten races are scheduled, and three completed races will constitute a series.  The skippers meeting will be held at 11:00 am Saturday at the VLSC clubhouse.  Warning for the first race Saturday is scheduled for noon, and warning for the first race Sunday is scheduled for 10:00 am.  There will be no races started after 3:00 pm Sunday.

In order to register a single-handed boat, the fee is $40.  The fee for double-handed boats is $60, and entry fee includes lunches for participants Saturday and Sunday, dinner for participants Saturday evening, and two days of racing.  Extra meals will be available to purchase for $5 per lunch each day and $10 for Saturday dinner.  However, if you plan to register and haven’t already, there is a $10 late fee (as of June 21).
