The International School (TIS), located in South Portland at 025 SW Sherman Street, has begun enrollment for their 2013 summer camp programs.  Founded in 1990, TIS is Portland’s first International Baccalaureate elementary school, and it educates over 480 students from ages 3 through 5th grade.  TIS provides a multicultural environment where children are fully immersed in Spanish, Japanese, or Chinese language and culture.  At TIS, children become fluent in another language and engaged in math, science, social studies, and arts.  TIS is offering several summer camp programs, and you can find information about all of them on their website.

During the summer camps, children will learn language and culture through hands-on projects, stories, songs, games, outdoor fun and many other activities designed to develop and enhance language skills.  Some summer traditions include field days, performances, and ice cream parties.  When registering your child in a TIS camp, you can expect small groups with teachers from around the world, fun outdoor and indoor activities aimed at building language skills, cultural performances, ice-cream socials, special classes with trained specialists, exciting field days, fun, cultural music and movement classes, and end-of-session celebrations with campers and teachers showcasing their work.

In order to choose the camp that’s right for your child, you must first decide what language you want your child to study.  TIS offers programs in Spanish, Chinese, or Japanese.  They have then divided up the camp sessions into color by age and fluency level in the chosen language.  The Yellow Camp is open to all fluency levels for children ages 3 and 4.  They have half or full day options, and the child must be completely potty trained.  The Orange Camp is for beginners or students with limited prior experience in the language entering Kindergarten or 1st grade.  They also have half and full day options.  The Purple Camp requires students to have at least one year of language immersion experience of the equivalent, it is for students entering Kindergarten or 1st grade, and it has half and full day options.  The Blue Camp is for beginners or students with limited prior experience in the language who are entering 2nd – 4th grade, and it is a full day camp.  Lastly, the Green Camp requires at least two years of language immersion experience or the equivalent.  Children should be able to speak, read, and write in the target language.  It is for students entering 2nd – 5th grade, and it is a full day camp.
