It may be Halloween weekend, with parties galore all weekend long, but don’t forget about all the parties going on Halloween night the following Thursday, October 31! South Portland’s Buffalo Gap is hosting its annual Halloween Show complete with a costume contest, giveaways, drink specials and more. Hutson and Fid your Smile will be providing live music at the event, which begins at 9pm. And the best part is they are not charging a cover!
Jack Stutzman founded the Buffalo Gap Saloon and Eatery, and the seed that has grown into the flourishing restaurant that it is today began in 1973, when they bought the “Hoot Owl Tavern” in 193. The tavern featured a small bar, 25 seats, and a huge snooker table. They served pepperoni, beer nuts, Polish sausage and chips. They remodeled the tavern in 1974 with burlap and old barn wood and developed a menu with sandwiches and scratch recipe soups. They have now added a kitchen, Grandma Stutzerelli’s pizza, salad, 75 seats, 2 pool tables, and one of the first beer gardens in Portland
They now have “The Attic,” established in 1985, which is the second floor of Buffalo Gap, a full kitchen, an upstairs deck, a full bar, and a full-service menu including breakfast, lunch, and dinner. In 1990, they turned the building next door into “The Annex,” which is their adults only Game Room. They throw private parties, sponsor special events in town, cater in-house private meetings, lunches, and dinners at people’s prices.
One of the bands performing is a local band called Hutson. It formed “in its current incarnation” in mid-2009, according to their website. Bryan Larson and Tony Colliver brought their library of unfinished songs to Andrew Nelson shortly after parting ways with their drummer of several years. That was when they decided they need to make a recording, so they hunkered down and recorded their debut EP “Reland,” which was released in April, 2010.
They live in “various basements around Portland” and released their first full-length album—“From A Transistor Radio”—in June, 2012. They have received glowing reviews from the Portland Mercury, and they has a successful release at the McMenamin’s White Eagle. They’re on tour again, and they will be playing this Thursday for Buffalo Gap’s Halloween party!
Find Your Smile will also be performing, and they are from Salem, Oregon. The members include brothers Scott and Erik Wurgler and brothers Jordan and Benjamin Roach. They met in second grade as next door neighbors, and they soon began their relationship of jamming together and goofing off in high school jazz choirs, which has generated a unique style fueled by their deep appreciation of technical training paired with matchless creativity. They collaborated formed Find Your Smile in 2010. Find Your Smile is an alternative rock group with deep jazz influences and pop undertones, known to sing the blues.
So if you’re looking for something to do this Halloween, head over to Buffalo Gap for some great talent and entertainment! Don’t forget to wear your best costume.
